You do not need to buy a mainland SIM solely because you want to start payment-app registration. Keep the number you can access, then check each remaining gate separately.
CHECK YOUR SETUP
Before you start
- A phone number you control and can keep during your trip.
- Access to verification messages and your card issuer’s checks.
THE NORMAL PATH
Your steps
Use overseas-number registration where offered
The national 2025 guide lists foreign or Chinese numbers for payment-app registration. Alipay’s published guidance explicitly describes registration before arrival with an overseas number. Select the correct country code and follow the current app prompts.
Do not confuse registration with payment readiness
A phone number establishes access to an account. It does not establish card eligibility, completion of identity checks or approval of a merchant purchase. Work through the relevant app’s setup guide and check the transaction outcome.
Decide on a local SIM for your actual needs
If you need local calls or another service expressly requires a mainland number, consider a local SIM. Before changing the registered number, check the app’s account-security flow and keep access to the old number until the change is complete. We have not tested number migration on a foreign-passport account.
LOOK FOR THIS
Check it worked
- You have selected a number you control rather than buying one on an unsupported assumption.
- You know whether the remaining issue is SMS access, app identity verification or a card payment.
KEEP A BACKUP
If it doesn’t work
The country selector does not list your number
Ask the app’s official support whether your country and account route are supported. A general foreign-number statement is not a guarantee for every market.
Your number registers but does not receive the next code
Use the SMS diagnostic page. Changing to a local number may introduce a new account-recovery issue; it is not a proven universal fix.

I use an overseas phone number. Is this specific service available with that number, or does it require a mainland number?
