A working data connection and a working SMS number are separate things. Sort out both before depending on a payment app or a driver message.
CHECK YOUR SETUP
Before you start
- Your phone and charger; check whether the phone is locked to a carrier.
- Your passport if applying for a local SIM.
- Your home carrier’s roaming terms and the number used by your bank.
THE NORMAL PATH
Your steps
Choose the connection you can use now
Before departure, ask your home carrier whether your plan supports data and incoming SMS in mainland China, and what it costs. Already at the airport? Ask an information desk about the official Wi-Fi network and its login method. Airport login requirements differ; we have not verified a nationwide passport-login route.
If you need a mainland number, use an operator service office
The national guide directs foreign-passport holders to China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom service offices with their passport. Ask staff to confirm device compatibility, data allowance, calls, SMS, total charge and cancellation terms before buying. A local number is an option, not a universal prerequisite for payment-app registration.
Keep your existing verification number reachable
Before replacing or disabling your home SIM, identify which number receives your bank and app codes. If using two SIMs, check which line is active for data and which remains available for messages. Do not assume a data-only travel product supplies a phone number or SMS; check its terms.
Check the connection before walking away
Turn Wi-Fi off briefly to test paid mobile data. Open a page you need for the journey and check the plan balance or usage display. If SMS matters, confirm your registered number remains active. Ask the seller to help while you are still at the counter.
LOOK FOR THIS
Check it worked
- You can load a page using the connection you plan to use outside the airport.
- You know which number will receive app and bank verification codes.
- You have saved the hotel’s Chinese address somewhere available offline.
KEEP A BACKUP
If it doesn’t work
Wi-Fi works but mobile data does not
Check the selected data line and your purchased plan with the carrier. Do not enable chargeable roaming blindly. Keep the hotel address offline and use an airport information desk while you resolve connectivity.
Data works but verification messages do not
An internet connection does not prove SMS reception. Open the SMS troubleshooting guide and check the phone line that owns the registered number.
The counter cannot process your passport
Ask which operator-owned service office can handle your document, its opening hours, and whether staff can write the location in Chinese. A passport requirement does not guarantee every reseller can activate a SIM.
