NEWCOMER CHINA / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Start with your passport and the exact hospital window

A hospital accepting foreign patients does not mean every app or mini program accepts a passport. Choose an exact campus and service window, then verify its registration rules. These are published administrative routes, not successfully tested bookings.

Identify the window before the app

Write down the hospital, campus, building and department. An international department may use different booking channels and fees from the general outpatient clinic. Beijing listings for China–Japan Friendship Hospital and Peking University International Hospital say those international departments do not provide emergency services. Their listings should not be treated as emergency-care routes.

Check whether a first-visit record is needed

Guangzhou’s 2023 municipal FAQ says the platform supports passport registration, while some hospitals require first-time patients to establish a record at the hospital. Because this is an older FAQ, confirm both current participation and the first-visit step with your chosen hospital. A platform account is not proof that your hospital patient record exists.

A passport may still require a local phone

Peking University Shenzhen Hospital’s International VIP page explicitly asks for a passport and a mainland China mobile number. It describes a WeChat appointment route and manual registration on floor 6. The linked page does not establish an alternative for someone without that number. Do not substitute a friend’s identity or assume that the manual counter removes the phone requirement. Ask the department.

Ask for a usable route

Send a short administrative question: “I am a first-time patient with a foreign passport. Which official booking channel can I use? Do I need a mainland mobile number or an in-person patient record? Which campus and counter should I attend?” The Shanghai outpatient guide describes passport identification and a patient card, but does not establish identical rules for every hospital.

Keep the confirmation

Record the date, campus, window, documents and reference number, if one is provided. If an online route rejects your document type, stop repeating that route and ask the official department about a supported manual channel. We have reviewed the sources, but have not completed registration or reserved appointments.
